2019 New Years Day Hike!

January 3rd, 2019 Posted by Events 0 thoughts on “2019 New Years Day Hike!”

This year was Skyline’s FOURTH annual New Years Day Hike and man! It was awesome. Twenty-two ambitious hikers of all abilities met at 11am at the Tavern, then shuttled to the Thurman Street trailhead and collectively began an epic forest march into 2019. There was a dense layer of fog over the city which dispersed a little with each foot gained in elevation, giving the park a mystical vibe and providing a kick-ass metaphor for the start of a new year. The sun was shining on the tavern when we returned, and each hiker was rewarded with a cold beer and warm fire (on us.) Outlook on 2019 is good, real good.

Our motivation behind providing these types of events at Skyline is to encourage more people to explore Forest Park, meet new friends and discover our Tavern, goals which we really felt like we accomplished on this day. What gives us real satisfaction is not just pouring your beers, it is nurturing the wonderful community we have here and making a positive impression on the future. For more of this, check out our weekly “Trail Run Tuesdays” and Hiking Club, which will return in the spring. Thanks so much to everyone that participated, we will see you in 2020!

And as a special added bonus, here’s Jerry preparing the fire for our return! Thanks Jerry! It was cozy <3

Music This Week 11/14-11/17

Dumpster Joe

On Wednesday Nov. 14 we welcome a very special guest, the great Dumpster Joe! Joe’s bringing his “old-time jugband music” to the Tavern, which features his res-o-phonic guitar and “singing voice that hearkens back to hard-time days gone by.” A friend and west coast legend, we are always excited when Dumpster Joe shows up.

Terry Robb

Friday the legendary fingerpicking acoustic blues legend Terry Robb will make a special appearance as part of his Cool on the Bloom Tour. Robb’s prolific career spans four decades; he has shared the stage with B.B. King, Bo Diddley, George Thorogood and many other musical luminaries. Robb has many award-winning projects under his belt and recently contributed to “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot,” the biopic about Portland’s late cartoonist John Callahan. We are honored to host an intimate show with this legend!

“Finger gawkers flood to his shows…unquestionably, Robb ranks right up there with the heavy hitters, a player of dazzling skill and technique. He could go to any guitar festival and show them a few chords.” – Frank Matheis, Living Blues

Feisty Heart

We complete the week with super fun duo from Venice Beach, Feisty Heart! The music this “two person trio” comprised of Ruthie Garibay (electric guitar, vocals) and Stuart Johnson (drums, bass) produces music influenced by classic rock n’ roll, blues, Americana with 60s & 70s pop. We are thrilled to welcome Feisty Heart in their premier Skyline Tavern appearance! Our friend Yohhei Sato will be hosting this extra special night.

Music this Week 11/8-11/10

If you have never enjoyed music in our cute lil’ old-timey place, you are missing something special. Bands from near and far climb Tualatin Mountain to share their talent with us. So close to Portland but it feels so far; coming up here is like going to the coast without leaving your backyard. Let our country vibes shake loose the spreadsheets & stresses of city life.

Normally, we host music on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights starting at 7pm but THIS week (and sometimes others) we are adding a

Thursday

soirée with LITTLE BROTHERS, who are representatives from THE BROTHER’S JAM. The Bros have been bringing their rootsy, Grateful Dead and Talking Heads-inspired to the world for 30+ years.

Friday

brings back KASEY ANDERSON, a long-time Portland musician who, after some time away from the scene, returned to play his first show at the Tavern in 2017. His recently released album “Hawks and Doves From a White Hotel” has earned stellar reviews.

Hawks and Doves from a White Hotel shines it’s spotlight on a new, improved Anderson; sober, sharp and ready to make up for lost time.” – Rolling Stone

Saturday

we round off the weekend with a very special visit from Portland’s favorite Rock and Soul power trio The Resolectrics in their first appearance at the Tavern after releasing their highly anticipated sophomore album “Open Seas” in October. With a heavy PNW following and active touring schedule, these guys will definitely be bringing lots of fun and fans. See you there!
